Though intimidating looking, the route is an excellent introduction to technical winter alpine
climbing due to the ease of the approach made possible by a quick ride up the Silver Queen lift at
Crested Butte Mountain Resort. The Silver Queen tops out at 11,500′ and from here a short
traverse across alpine boulder fields finds you at the base of the long and jagged 800′ arete
know as the ‘Guides Ridge.’
After a roped ascent of a few hours you’ll arrive on the 12,162′ summit of Mt Crested Butte. Upon reaching the summit, based on your skill level and conditions, you will walk or rappel back to the Silver Queen, or for those looking for more of a challenge you can ski down to the base area.
